I think your focus on wish-fulfillment/main-character syndrome is certainly one of the defining features of contemporary culture for both men and women.
We can generalize this underlying structure to that of the 'power-fantasy.'
Invariably, these stories are morally flattening and have a very black-and-white, Manichean view of the world (which is, in a sense, quintessentially Liberal/American).
