For a pseudonymous author who can’t practically engage in live literary readings for pragmatic reasons, podcast interviews go a long way toward contextualizing my fiction. My view is that all the podcast appearances of
went a long way toward building up his notoriety and helping him to build up a persona and sell more books (and anything that sells more books is good).The “meta-narrative” surrounding a work of literary fiction is always of interest to a reader and adds an additional element of fun to the process of interpreting their work (for a great podcast series about this, I suggest
).I think the podcast form will continue to evolve and further incorporate pseudonymity over time, with 3-D avatars running on facial recognition taking the place of IRL face-video—in fact, this technology is already readily available (it’s just that I’m far too busy to use it).
The other thing I’m starting to realize is how interesting it is to listen to your own voice passed through a simple modulator. It grants you, as the author, an impressive level of vocal authority in a fairly hilarious fashion.
For those of you who are still careermaxxing to the fullest, I respectfully suggest dropping octaves in your day-to-day life Elizabeth-Holmes-style as a means of boosting your position in your corporate hierarchy.
